What I learned at Strategic Coach last week

Every quarter, I (Tim) go to an entrepreneurial coaching session with Strategic Coach. This program is designed for high level entrepreneurs to increase their freedom of time, money, relationship and purpose. To hear more about how they have delivered on this for me, feel free to give me a call sometime or we can grab coffee.

But I wanted to share a few things I learned this past week in our session in Santa Monica. My goal is that some of these will be beneficial for you as well:

1. “A-Players cost you nothing.” – Chad Johnson.

As a business owner, you’ve had both good and bad experiences hiring people. But if you’ve ever made a great hire, you know that this is true: what you invest in A-Players comes back to you in spades, because they are the ones who transform your company. We are in the middle of a season of growth, and it has been truly refreshing to find A-Players to help us grow.

2. “Money is the end of something: capability is the beginning.” – Dan Sullivan

When you get paid for a job well done, it feels good, and it should. But this is perhaps the most lagging of all lagging indicators. Think about this for a moment: once you have a key capability, it unlocks new worlds. I’ll give you an example.

When my friend David ran the local Chick-fil-A, he got a lot of my money. When he got me on the Chick-fil-A app, and I learned how you could have chicken minis hot and waiting for you when you drove up, David gained a capability… and then he gained a lot more of my money.

3. “I took back my Buffer Days for creativity.” – Rod Gibbings

Rod is several years ahead of where I am in his business development, and to hear how he is taking a Strategic Coach concept and reinventing a key part of his time, I began to see how I could do the same. Buffer days, in Strategic Coach terminology, are for cleaning up messes, gaining new capabilities, and delegating to genius. When Rod delegates to his A- players, he accomplishes two things. First, he empowers his team to “make recur” what he has “made-up” and “made real”. But perhaps more important for him personally, Rod now has time to be creative, to envision the future of his company. He’s no longer tightly scheduled, so he is free to transform himself and his company.

These were just three of my top takeaways. If you want more, or if you’re curious to see if Strategic Coach might help you, hit me up. In the meantime, I’ll be empowering my A-Players, taking control of my buffer days, and building new capabilities to serve my clients better.
