Certified Financial Planner®, CFP®

A CFP® professional is a financial advisor who has earned certification to provide financial planning services to individuals. This can include creating personalized plans for investments, retirement, insurance, education financing, tax strategies, and estate planning. One of the most significant aspects of a CFP® professional role is their commitment to act as a fiduciary, always prioritizing their client’s best interests.

CFP® professionals are supposed to take a holistic approach to financial planning. They begin by thoroughly evaluating a client’s entire financial picture. This includes assessing income, assets (such as investments and property), and liabilities (like mortgages or student loans). Based on this detailed assessment and the client’s specific goals, they develop a tailored financial plan.

Certified Exit Planning Advisor, CEPA

The Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) is a unique credential that allows professional advisors to deeply engage with business owners and help them plan every aspect of their personal finances. Whether you are looking to sell or transition out of the business when retirement rolls around, a CEPA can help you plan for a successful transition.

Many business owners struggle to align their personal finances, only paying attention to the business finances. Having an advisor on your team that possesses the CEPA designation will help you build a more valuable company, align your financial goals and create a solid personal financial plan that can help you confidently transition into a successful retirement.

Chartered Life Underwriter®, CLU®

A CLU® is a professional designation for financial advisors, insurance agents, and planners who specialize in life insurance, estate planning, and wealth transfer strategies. It’s considered one of the most respected credentials in the insurance and financial services industry, particularly for those focusing on life insurance and estate planning.

Professionals with a CLU® designation are seen as experts in protecting client wealth, designing insurance solutions, and developing long-term estate plans, making them highly trusted advisors in personal and business financial matters.

Accredited Investment Fiduciary®, AIF®

The Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) is an ethical certification issued by Fi360. That body is sometimes known by its former name, the Center for Fiduciary Studies.

An AIF® has completed Fi360’s course on ethical behavior and fiduciary services. The advisors have learned to balance their business interests against a client-first (or fiduciary) approach.

The AIF® credential focuses on improving client service. However, it also aims to make professional life safer for financial advisors. For example, part of the course involves best practices and documentation. That can help financial advisors avoid mismanagement claims by having proper documentation and avoiding conflicts of interest.

“Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Center for Financial Planning, Inc. owns and licenses the certification marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®, and CFP® (with plaque design) in the United States to Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc., which authorizes individuals who successfully complete the organization’s initial and ongoing certification requirements to use the certification marks.”

Certified Investment Management Analyst®, CIMA®

The certification is offered by the Investments and Wealth Institute. The designation focuses on asset allocation, ethics, due diligence, risk measurement, investment policy and performance measurement. Those with the CIMA® designation typically focus on investment consulting.

The main reason for this is that the CIMA® credential allows these advisors to significantly raise their rates. Additionally, CIMA®s have to show they are skilled not only in finance but also business strategy, management and operations. This means they are well-prepared to assess risk and make decisions for entire corporations or funds. For the same reason, they are often better suited to advise wealthier clients and large corporations.
